When clients arrive exhausted, overwhelmed, and unable to make sense of what’s happening to them, it can take significant clinical energy to create structure from the chaos.

This toolkit helps you do that faster.

Designed for therapists working with burnout, stress-related exhaustion, nervous system dysregulation, perfectionism, and over-functioning, these tools provide a flexible formulation framework you can integrate into the way you already work.

Whether your background is CBT, ACT, CFT, EMDR, integrative, or mindfulness-based practice, the toolkit helps you organise complexity without forcing you into a rigid model.

The Sustainable Boundaries Framework

Identify which of the main boundary-types have been eroded, work out which to help them focus on, including scripts to practice and skill-up on.

What This Toolkit Helps You Do

Help clients move from:
 “I’m just failing at coping”
or
“I don’t know where to start”

 to
“I can see the patterns keeping me stuck.”
And “I feel confident we have a path through this”

USE IT TO:

identify burnout-maintaining cycles
reduce session drift
improve psychoeducation
support collaborative formulation
create clearer recovery plans

WITHOUT:

reinventing formulations from scratch
over-preparing between sessions
relying on generic stress handouts
losing therapeutic focus in overwhelmed sessions

Built to Work Alongside Your Existing Modality

This is not a manualised burnout protocol.

It’s a flexible clinical framework designed to integrate with how you already practise.

Examples Across Modalities:

CBT
Map behavioural, cognitive, and physiological burnout cycles, including over-working, avoidance, guilt, and exhaustion.

ACT
Explore fusion with productivity-based identity, experiential avoidance, and movement toward sustainable values.

CFT
Visualise threat, drive, and soothing system imbalance, alongside self-criticism and depletion.

Mindfulness & Somatic Approaches
Support interoceptive awareness, pacing, and early recognition of depletion signals.

EMDR & Trauma-Informed Work
Identify the overlap between burnout, chronic stress activation, trauma responses, and protective adaptations.

Why Therapists Are Choosing This Toolkit

Reduce Cognitive Load

Burnout presentations are often diffuse, emotionally heavy, and difficult to structure in real time. The toolkit helps organise information quickly so you can stay present with the client.

Increase Client Insight

Clients often feel shame about “not coping.” Visual formulations help externalise patterns and reduce self-blame.

Improve Session Focus

The tools provide gentle structure when sessions risk becoming repetitive, circular, or overly problem-saturated.

Enhance Professional Presentation

Beautifully designed fillable PDFs you can use in-person or online, helping clients feel held within a thoughtful, coherent process.

Save Time

Spend less energy creating formulations and psychoeducation materials from scratch for every burnout case.

You’re smart, capable, and outwardly holding it all together - but inside, things feel increasingly unsustainable.

Designed for Real Clinical Practice

This has been designed and created by Dr Claire Plumbly, a Clinical Psychologist specialising in burnout, trauma, anxiety, and author on this topic.

Claire developed these tools to support her 1-to-1 therapy work when she couldn’t find quite what she was looking for available elsewhere. All of the tools are backed by the research into the most helpful psychological approaches for burnout – see the references below.

They are designed to help therapists hold complexity with greater clarity, consistency, and confidence.

What Therapists Are Saying

Anna was kind and compassionate, made me feel at ease and allowed me to lead the directions our sessions would travel. I have learnt a lot about myself, thoughts feelings and how I process things. It has been a positive experience which will help shape my future.
